Downton Abbey star's shock split

Hugh Bonneville, famous for his role in Downton Abbey, has parted ways with his wife, Lucinda "Lulu" Williams, after 25 years of marriage. This revelation came shortly after Bonneville attended a co-star's wedding without his wedding ring.

A spokesperson for the actor confirmed the separation, stating, "I can confirm that Hugh Bonneville and Lulu Williams have separated," as reported by the UK Sun.

Sources close to the situation reveal that the decision to split was initiated by Bonneville himself. Williams reportedly felt that their lengthy 25-year marriage had been devalued, given Bonneville's recent focus on various aspects of his life.

The source explained, "Hugh has been away from home filming a lot this year. He has lost a bit of weight this summer, he was looking trim, tanned and relaxed."

Signs of trouble in their relationship first emerged when the 59-year-old actor attended the wedding of his Downton Abbey co-star, Michelle Dockery, without his wedding ring and without Lulu.

Their last public appearance together dates back to April when they attended a gala at the Old Vic Theatre in London.

Bonneville had previously praised his estranged wife, referring to her as his "bedrock" and "anchor", according to the UK Sun. He humorously recounted their initial connection, saying, "Lulu was running a marquee company … my mother rang her to hire some chairs or something and said, 'Do you remember Hugh?' and that was how we reconnected," though he jokingly added that it "infuriated" him that he had to "give full credit" to his mother.

To commemorate their 20th anniversary, the couple renewed their vows at the Graceland chapel in Las Vegas just five years ago. Bonneville and Williams initially met as teenagers but didn't embark on a romantic relationship until their 30s. They exchanged their vows in November 1998 and share a son, Felix, who is now 20 years old.

Images: Instagram

King Charles’ grimmest guest exposed

In the months leading up to King Charles III’s extravagant coronation, the guest list was a hot topic.

From “will she or won’t she?” discussions surrounding Meghan Markle to the “who’s who?” of British high society, there was always something on hand to pick apart. But one guest that no-one had seen coming - except perhaps in some of the internet’s darkest jokes - was the Grim Reaper.

The cloaked figure was spotted during Charles’ May 6 coronation at Westminster Abbey, scurrying past a doorway with a long thin staff in hand, reminiscent of the reaper’s scythe or Charon’s ferry oar.

Those determined to see some Harry and Meghan drama transpire joked that it may have been the prince’s wife in disguise, or even the late Diana back for “revenge”, and social media was rife with jokes, though most were of the opinion that the mysterious guest was none other than the fabled Grim Reaper.

One Twitter user wasted no time in sharing a clip of the figure’s appearance at the abbey, asking if anyone else was seeing the same thing.

Anyone else just notice the Grim Reaper at Westminster Abbey? 👀#Coronation pic.twitter.com/77s4XIY17i

— Joe (@realjoegreeeen) May 6, 2023

“Yep, had to pause & rewind to get a pic,” one like-minded soul wrote in response, “couldn't decide if it was Death (Pratchett would be proud) or maybe Darth Vader!”

“High security should allow the identity of the grim reaper to be revealed. No doubt this is an official walk-in,” another said.

“I thought I was seeing things when this happened,” one user admitted, “would love to know who it was.”

“Diana getting her revenge,” another decided.

There was, of course, another possibility, as someone pointed out when they wrote “Charles got pranked.”

When footage was uploaded to TikTok, alongside the caption “NAH IT CANT JUST BE ME THAT SAW IT”, the response was similar, with the video collecting over 31k comments, and 21 million views.

“Grim reaper Casually invited to the coronation as a security guard,” one user said.

“That is Diana,” another declared.

Meanwhile, someone was simply of the opinion that “Lizzy [was] coming back for her crown”.

Thankfully, they weren’t left to ponder it for long, with a Westminster Abbey spokesperson putting the grim theories to rest, confirming the figure’s identity as a member of the abbey community. More specifically, as a verger, an individual who assists with religious services but who is not actually a member of the clergy itself.

Images: Twitter

Julie Bishop tells all from inside King Charles' coronation

Julie Bishop has shared what it was really like inside Westminster Abbey for the coronation of King Charles.

The former Australian Foreign Minister joined many international dignitaries in London on Saturday for the royal event, where Bishop managed to snag a second row seat.

Bishop was invited for her role as chair of Prince's Trust Australia, and was seated beside Lionel Ritchie, who performed at the coronation concert.

The duo snapped a selfie together which quickly went viral, and was condemned by entertainment report Peter Ford.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Hon Julie Bishop (@honjuliebishop)

Ford claimed it was "so inappropriate to be doing selfies inside the Abbey", to which Bishop defended by saying they took the photo before the ceremony began.

"He (Ritchie) was very much in demand and he reposted my selfie. So that was probably as big a thrill as attending the coronation," Bishop joked.

She went on to tell 7News that the pair were making comments to each other throughout the service, as they pointed out who else was invited to the coronation.

"During the procession, we'd be whispering to each other... I'd say that's the Papua New Guineans and he'd tell me who somebody else was."

"But then as he was singing a hymn, I was very quiet. I didn't want to have my voice heard. That's quite an experience in itself having Lionel Ritchie singing hymns next to you."

Julie said she felt honoured to be invited to the historic ceremony, admitting. "I have never been to anything like this."

"I felt deeply privileged to be invited and to witness the pageantry and the beauty and the religious and historical significance of this service was deeply moving."

"When you're actually there, there was a sense of excitement and anticipation."

Ms Bishop said she arrived about over two hours before the actual service began, with the service itself being two hours long.

"Everybody was feeling a little bit nervous... (But) everything moved perfectly and there were many moving parts and I had a fabulous spot."

"I was in the second row, so just one row back from the aisle. so I was able to have a, a pretty unhindered view of all of the famous faces walking by."

Scott Morrison’s children insulted online

Scott Morrison’s daughters have been trolled online for the way they dress just days out before the federal election.

The Prime Minister was with his wife Jenny, daughters Abbey and Lily at the Liberal Party campaign launch in Brisbane on May 15.

A family photo from the event was shared online and a troll immediately jumped and attacked Abbey and Lily for the way they dress.

“I'm not one to criticize appearances, but why is it that @ScottMorrisonMP's women always dress like the Amish? (serious Q),” the troll’s comment read.

Twitter users however were not having any of it, calling out the troll for his insensitive comments to leave the children alone.

“Oh ffs still picking on the kids. So classy,” one person wrote.

“What on earth is wrong with people,” another commented.

This is not the first time Morrison’s kids have been on the receiving end of disgusting comments with many saying the prime minister was using them as a publicity stunt.

In February, he shared a photo of himself with daughter Lily in the kitchen while cooking a curry.

“Joined by my curry apprentice tonight. Chicken Xacuti and Eggplant Masala,” he captioned the photo.

People accused the prime minister of lying because the photo was in fact a few years old and not taken in the moment.

Another incident was back on Australia Day when another family photo was shared online with many calling out his daughter’s fashion sense.

Image: Twitter

Mum is proud of me for putting myself out there.”

Johanna Griggs recalls her foul-mouthed encounter with Dame Maggie Smith

Better Homes and Gardens host Johnna Griggs has opened up about her frightening encounter with Dame Maggie Smith.

In a new interview, Griggs told news.com.au that she met the Oscar-winning star when they were filming an episode of Better Homes And Gardens in 2011.

“Downton Abbey had launched overseas but they hadn’t launched in Australia, so they asked us to go over and do a behind-the-scenes look at the cast and the crew,” Griggs said.

The Better Homes and Gardens team went to the set of the show in England, to shoot the location of the period drama.

“Obviously we’d seen a lot of pre-episodes of Downton Abbey, we’d heard all the hype about it coming out and I was personally so excited about meeting Dame Maggie Smith,” Griggs said.

“We kept saying to them, ‘We’re going to be really, really easy. You won’t even know we’re here, we’re going to be behind the scenes. We’ll grab you each for two minutes if you’ve got a spare two minutes between scenes.’ In my head I was like, ‘I can’t wait to meet Dame Maggie, I can’t wait!’"

However, Griggs’s expectations were quickly ruined when Smith, who plays Dowager Countess of Grantham, became frustrated with the Aussie film crew on set.

“They were doing a rehearsal for a scene and we had permission to film so we were shooting a wide shot of the room and then Dame Maggie just quietly stops and says, ‘Why is there a f***ing camera in my face?’”

“The PR company said, ‘Oh, Dame Maggie, this is a crew from Australia called Better Homes and Gardens. It’s the number one lifestyle show and we’re about to launch in Australia and we’ve had lots of discussions about this. They’re here to promote the show.’

“She goes, ‘Well, I don’t care who they f***ing are, so get the f***ing camera out of my face.’

“We just very quietly backed out of the room and closed the door. It was one of those things where you’re like, ‘That’s not how I thought that would go in my head.’”

Griggs said the other Downton Abbey cast and crew were lovely to her and her team.

“They said to us, ‘That’s just Dame Maggie — she loves to do this and put people off. It’s her thing,’” Griggs said.

Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery heartbroken like Lady Mary: "I consider myself a widow"

Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery has opened up about the tragic death of her fiancé two years ago, saying she considers herself a widow.

“I’ve never been more committed to anything in my life than to him,” she said in an interview on the weekend with the Guardian.

“I don’t have the vocabulary to describe what it felt like and what it still feels like. I refer to myself as a widow, yes. We were engaged, and married at heart, and so I do consider myself a widow.”

Dockery, 35, and John Dineen, an Irish public relations director, were engaged for a year before he died at the age of 34.

But to add to the grief, Dockery’s character in Downton Abbey, Lady Mary Crawley, also lost her husband.

“One of the difficult things at the time was the parallels with Mary,” said the actress.

“It was just baffling, and still is to me, that my character’s storyline was so similar.”

Although Dockery said she felt “very excited” about leaving the show and moving on to other things, she may be portraying Lady Mary once more.

Julian Fellowes' big screen adaptation of his popular TV series has been given the green light.

During an exhibition for the show in Singapore this summer, Michael Edelstein, president at NBC Universal International Studios, said: “There's a movie in the works. It's been in the works for some time.

“We are working on getting the script right, and then we've got to figure out how to get the (cast) together.”

7 of Downton Abbey’s most iconic plot twists

Downton Abbey burst onto screens around the world in 2010, seducing audiences with its slick writing (courtesy of writer/creator Julian Fellowes), gorgeous period styling, and its acerbic wit. On top of all that, Fellowes kept us guessing with twists that left many gasping. Here are seven of the most iconic.

1. The post-coital death

What had seemed like a well-written and engrossing period drama kicked into another level in its third episode when Mary was seduced by the Turkish ambassador, Mr Pamuk. While the two are in bed, Pamuk suffers a fatal heart attack, and Mary is forced to enlist the help of Anna and her mother to move the body back to his room. This one event had ripples that were felt through both season one and two.

2. Miss O’Brien’s revenge

We spent three seasons despising Cora’s lady’s maid, Miss O’Brien – never more so than when, at the end of season one, she places a bar of soap on the floor of the bathroom, intending the currently pregnant Cora to slip. O’Brien did have a moment of redemption when she reconsidered her act, and tried to stop Cora from getting out of the bath, but it was too late. Cora slipped and miscarried, then O’Brien spent the rest of her time at Downton wracked with guilt.

3. The death of Mrs Bates

As the second season was drawing to a close, we watched dumbstruck as Mr Bates’ deceitful estranged wife, Vera, was found dead. Having seemingly killed herself with poison in a (successful) attempt to frame her husband for murder, Vera Bates managed to win her final, evil game.

4. Mr Bates is condemned

By the end of season two, Mr Bates was on trial for his life, and it wasn’t looking good. Audiences watched in horror as the jury got it wrong – convicting the beloved valet and sentencing him to death. To say the season ended on a down note is not inaccurate.

5. Downton’s sweetest daughter dies

Season three was rough on our emotions. Mary and Matthew finally tie the knot, poor Edith is left at the altar, and Tom and Cybil return from Ireland expecting a baby. Then, everything gets decidedly terrible when, after giving birth, Cybil dies of eclampsia. Audiences watched as Dr Clarkson was overruled in favour of medical advice from aristocratic fools. The very best of the Grantham daughters was gone, leaving behind a mourning husband and newborn baby girl.

6. Matthew’s final joy ride

Downton fans were on top of the world at the end of season three’s Christmas special – Mary and Tom’s efforts to modernise the estate had saved Downton from financial ruin, and Mary had given birth to a son – Downton’s new heir. But, as a joyous Matthew drove home from the hospital, he flipped his car and died. Lady Mary, and Downton, was never the same.

7. Anna is raped

This episode sent shockwaves around the world when Anna, Lady Mary’s beloved lady’s maid was raped by the seemingly charming Mr Green – Lord Gillingham’s valet. The show, though focusing a little more than was necessary on Mr Bates’ perspective instead of Anna’s, did not let the incident become a minor plot point – the repercussions were felt widely throughout this and the next season. Joanne Froggatt (Anna) won a Golden Globe for the season, and dedicated the award to all survivors of sexual assault who had reached out to her since seeing the episode.

Who was your favourite character in Downton?
